About 5 months ago my timing belt shredded on my 08 Suzuki Reno prematurely. 4 valves bent but the pistons are fine. Yesterday finally replaced the head. Runs great again. Total cost repair, 70 bucks for a complete head and 70 bucks for head bolts and gasket kit. Anyone else do there own repairs?

Yeah...I have to do work on both of my trucks today.
Headed out on a 2 day trip yesterday morning...... and ended turning around and coming home. The truck was running hotter than normal. Not quite "overheating" but definitely hotter than normal. I figured that it would become a problem on a hotter day Feeling the radiator surface, I noticed hot/cold spots. Pretty sure the Rad is plugged up. Picked a new one up yesterday for $140
Other truck needs a fuel pump. Moved it while cutting grass last week. When I was done cutting grass and went to move it back...it would not start. I confirmed it had no fuel pressure. Had my son crank it over, while I knocked on the tank with a block of wood. That was enough to free up the pump...and it started up. That is one of my favorite "mechanics tricks" Bought a new Delphi pump assembly on eBay for less than $150, with a $20 off code.

Put the radiator and a thermostat into the Ram. All is good now. Was pleasantly surprised that Advance auto parts carried Stant thermostats. I always had good luck with them when I was working at the Boys . (As long as the design matches OEM) Decided to call it a day and do the fuel pump some other time. Going to access it by loosening up the bed and lifting it. When working for a living as an Auto tech, I never used rechargeable tools. Used them almost exclusively today.

My truck is due for an axle dope and transfer case fluid change. I'm debating on doing myself or having the dealership do it. Now that I'm older and in a better position in life to pay others to do it, I may let the dealership do it. I use to love working on cars, when I didn't have to. I hated changing something out so I could get to work the next day.

I cringe every time my wife takes her Camry to the local Toyota stealership for an oil change. She got in that routine because when she bought the car new, they gave her 2 years of free oil changes...or something along those lines. Anyway...every time she takes it in..they write up a laundry list of things that "need to be done" Several times...she took their word for it...and had it done without consulting me. At least 2 unnecessary alignments..... I basically don't believe in doing "maintenance" alignments Three or 4 months ago, they said she "needed" brakes front and rear...I had her bring it home. The rear pads had 4/32 lining left which is in the "suggested zone"...not "needed" And 4/32 on the rear of a front wheel drive tends to last a long time. The front brake pads were 8/32 which is nowhere close to "needing" brakes. To make her feel better...I went ahead and slapped a new set of pads on the rear. She did find a way to avoid all the high pressure nonsense though. Show up an hour before they close on Saturday, without an appointment. At that time...they are focused on going home, not writing up a bunch of suggested repairs. What really ticks me off is when they are suggesting things 20k miles before the factory suggested interval.

After clashing several times...we finally came to understanding... Don't do anything they suggest. Don't call me. Tell them you don't have time today. Have them write up whatever estimate they want and bring it home. At that point, I'll decide what needs to be done...and do it myself.

Hemi plug change is a piece of cake compared to some of the Fords. Particularly the Ford engines with new design spark plug that breaks off in the head. There are multiple "specialty tools" to remove the broken ones. Tune up cost...book time + 1 hour for each plug that breaks.

Yup...my buddy has 2010 F150 with I think 5.3 or 5.4? Engine...rated top five worst trucks to buy...plug issues and the camshafts start to go out of phase after 100,000km..and TERRIBLE fuel mileage..my hemi blows that truck away in every catagory!...told him not to buy it...but his choice

Yup...my buddy has 2010 F150 with I think 5.3 or 5.4? Engine...rated top five worst trucks to buy...plug issues and the camshafts start to go out of phase after 100,000km..and TERRIBLE fuel mileage..my hemi blows that truck away in every catagory!...told him not to buy it...but his choice I believe the plug issues were on the 4.6 and 5.4 3 valve (per cylinder) engines. ....I forgot about all those issues with the cam phasers. UGH! Started seeing those in my last year of wrench turning. I never actually got to change the plugs on any of them. A co-worker ran into issues on one..... Every time I got one to do a plug change....the customer was warned about the possibility of broken plugs and additional cost....and decided to not have the work done. The previous generation of Fords was not much better. Had issues with heads having very few plug threads...and engines would blow the spark plugs out. One generation , you could not keep plugs in them...Later generation you could not get them out.
